Dr. Choulet, what motivated you to start the Performance Psychiatrist, and what services do you offer physicians?
The current healthcare system makes it challenging for busy professionals and their families to get quick access to their physicians, in addition to thorough appointments where one does not feel rushed. This motivated me to start my private practices, Choulet Wellness: Scottsdale Concierge Psychiatry and Therapy as well as La Jolla Concierge Psychiatry.
What are the biggest challenges you see physicians facing today?
A significant challenge that physicians are facing is the burden of administrative tasks and paperwork in addition to patient care. We became doctors to take care of others; however, sometimes, prior authorizations, paperwork, and other administrative items require a substantial amount of time.
What are your favorite strategies for reducing burnout?
Taking time for oneself and scheduling self-care into your day to go a long way in helping to reduce burnout. With my patients, I often talk about how your day is often like a cup of water, where it starts full in the morning but various things drain your cup throughout the day. It’s important to find ways to fill up your cup. This could include taking time for lunch with friends, setting aside a few moments to go to doctors appointments, playing a sport, or simply enjoying a massage. It’s also important to identify when you’re starting to feel irritable and short and use that as a sign that you maybe approaching burnout.
Are there any resources you’d recommend to physicians for optimizing the efficiency of their practices?
One method to optimize efficiency is to determine ways to automate your workflow. Gone are the times of manually sending intake forms or manually charging credit cards on file. It’s important to utilize software that has the capacity to automatic the administrative tasks that are obstacles to having more time for patient care. You can use an EMR with several of these features, as well as creating note templates that you can fill in based on the encounter.
(Editor's featured tech: Cydoc's Smart Patient Intake Form is compatible with any EMR and automatically generates an HPI/subjective section from patient intake forms, saving 10 minutes per patient visit.)
What are your future plans for The Performance Psychiatrist™?
In the future, I plan to continue to partner with sports organizations to provide mental health care to athletes and staff, as well as providing organizational support to enhance wellness programs.
What “words of wisdom” would you want every physician to have the chance to hear?
Practice medicine the way you want to practice, whether that be in a hospital setting or an outpatient clinic. It’s never too late to pivot your career.
